β€œAll of its members are more or less civilized; that is to say they are not savages. The mercantile portion is principally engaged in keeping bar-rooms, saloons, coffee-house, restaurants etc. All are prosperous. They retain all their pristine instincts of jealousy, lust and vindictiveness.”

  1. August 9 – August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht found the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (SDAP).
  2. August 15. Destruction of the Boston Fish Company's building, Fifth Street and Columbia Avenue. Loss over $50,000.
  3. August 16. Scarcity of water in the Schuylkill. Steam fire engines used to pump water into Fairmount basin.
  4. August 27 - University of Oxford win the first international boat race held on the River Thames against Harvard University.
  5. August 31 – Irish scientist Mary Ward is killed in a car accident, possibly the first person ever to suffer this fate.
